The Irish Edge, featuring Hermitage Green, Vagabonds
CelticFest Vancouver marks the first-ever Canadian performances by this band of firebrands from Limerick, Ireland.
Famed for their energetic live performances, the five members of Hermitage Green are something exciting and new, with hard-hitting rhythm sections driven by the tribal combination of bodhrán and djembe, rhythmic guitar lines with dobro melodies and soaring four-part harmonies. Incendiary live performances and a unique and innovative arrangement of instruments helps give Hermitage Green their distinctive live sound.
The band has been touring relentlessly since their formation in 2010, starting out as a spontaneous jam session between friends, but soon developing into a strong acoustic outfit with an original sound. Hitting the live circuit, they quickly won over legions of fans and selling out shows in Ireland, the UK, France, the Middle East, South Africa, the US and Australia, racking up in excess of five hundred live shows. Their sold-out Australian tour featured many highlights, including a gig at Sydney Harbour on Australia Day.
September 2012 saw the band release their debut EP, The Gathering, which rocketed straight into number 1 in the iTunes chart. Their debut, chart-topping album Live At Whelans, recorded at their sold out shows in Whelans, Dublin last October, captures the sheer raw power of the band on stage.
Following on their successes, they have been invited to join Mumford and Sons and Josh Ritter, among others, as special guests. Summer 2013 saw them at a variety of festival appearances, including a performance before a delighted 7000-capacity Electric Arena tent at Ireland’s most favoured festival, the Electric Picnic. Hermitage Green also enjoyed a weekly residency on Ireland’s national RTÉ TV sports show, Second Captains last Autumn. Most recently, this fast-rising band has been touring with The Pogues on their UK Tour dates. Now, we think, they are poised to take CelticFest and Vancouver by storm!
Vagabonds started out as a five piece cover band whose members all originally hail from Ireland. They met in Vancouver in 2010 and discovered a common love for all things music. Their obvious talent, depth of experience and a common musical theme brought about the birth of Vagabonds. In 2011, two more members joined the group upping the collective to seven. The new additions expanded upon the already extensive musical capacity of the group. Over the past two years, Vagabonds have become a regular fixture on the Greater Vancouver Area gig scene, playing at a wide range of venues in Downtown Vancouver and the lower mainland.
Vagabonds' musical style can be described as contemporary rock with a Celtic edge. With a repertoire ranging from artists such as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Prince, and Arcade Fire; Vagabonds are sure to appeal to all tastes. Not forgetting their roots, they are always ready with traditional Irish favourites and modern Irish rock. But regardless of the artist or the song, the group simply love to perform and put on a show bursting with energy on every occasion.
