Afro-Peruvian musical collective Novalima returns to the Rickshaw Theatre on April 26th, with guests Empanadas Ilegales!

Novalima

From Lima, Peru, Novalima fuses traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythms with cutting-edge electronic, dub, reggae, salsa, and global beats. With six acclaimed albums, a Latin Grammy nomination and performances at top festivals worldwide, Novalima has become a pioneer in modern Afro-Peruvian music. Their music bridges cultural and generational gaps, uniting audiences through infectious rhythms and a deep connection to their roots. This year, Novalima celebrates their 20th anniversary with the release of new album La Danza and an international tour.

Empanadas Ilegales

Empanadas Ilegales mixes rhythmic cumbia, hypnotic guitar riffs, and salsa-spiced trumpet & sax, with surf rock, free jazz and West Coast psychedelia.

Based in Vancouver, BC, their resonant roots from Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina and Canada combine to deliver a dedicated tribute to cumbia deep-cuts. Recorded across three different phases and studios, it’s a trifecta of experimental synth sounds, slinky dub grooves and dynamic percussion. Sancocho Trifásico represents the creation – and celebration – of Latin American dance music across time and space, inspiring convivial gathering in every note.
